Considering buying Ethereum Name Service? ENS Rundown
Ethereum Name Service is a distributed and extensible naming service based on Ethereum blockchain. ENS converts human-readable Ethereum addresses such as john.eth to machine-readable alphanumeric code you know from wallets such Metamask. It is also possible to reverse the process, associating machine-readable addresses and metadata with human-readable Ethereum address.
The Ethereum Name Service's goal is to make Ethereum-based websites easier to use and understand for people. This is similar to the way that the Internet's Domain Name Service makes it more accessible. ENS uses a similar system to DNS. Domain owners have full control over their subdomains.
ENS launched in November 2021 with a successful retroactive airdrop that rewarded users who registered addresses before the token was launched. It was criticised by its director for operations in February 2022 for apparently homophobic Tweets.
Ethereum Name Service is unique in that it transfers Domain Name Service to decentralized Web3.
ENS is not a company, but an open-source project. It calls itself "an open utility that belongs to the business." It aims to be an infrastructure piece as important to Web3 as the DNS to the internet. ENS is more secure and censorship-resistant than other platforms and does not have a single point for failure.
ENS aims at overcoming one of the major obstacles to widespread adoption of blockchain technology: their accessibility and ease-of-use. Instead of using complicated, but machine-readable alphanumeric codes that can be difficult to remember, users can get any crypto or FFT via a simple link. This makes it easier for users to use blockchain technology and less technical.
ENS is built upon two smart contract. The first is an ENS registry that records domains registered on ENS. It also stores the following information:
- The domain owner
- The domain resolver
- All records in the domain are cached at the same time
The resolver is the second smart contract. Its purpose is the translation of machine-readable addresses into domain names and vice versa. Each domain will be matched to its respective user, website or address.
