The Swiss Bank Corporation (SBC), a private banking consortium, was established in the 1890s. It was aided by Switzerland’s international neutrality. The Bank of Winterthur and Toggenburger Bank merged in 1912 to create the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS). This bank grew quickly after the 1934 Banking Law codified Swiss banking secrecy. After decades of competition between the Union Bank of Switzerland (SBC) and the Swiss Bank Corporation, the two companies merged in 1998 to form a single company called "UBS". UBS is not the acronym for Union Bank of Switzerland. It was actually one of more than 370 financial institutions that, since 1862 have been part of UBS. UBS suffered heavy losses in 2008 due to the financial crisis. It had an asset recovery program and was then hit by the 2011 Rogue Trader Scandal, which resulted in a trading loss of US$2 Billion.
